Step-by-step guide for attaching metal/PVC corners to tile edges

Metal tile trims have stainless steel, aluminum, or brass material, they are robust, stylish borders. They are suitable for high-traffic or damp places(e.g., showers, kitchens) because they withstand corrosion, impacts, and moisture.

Particularly 304-grade, very suitable in wet areas. It has a polished, high-end appearance but demands accurate cutting due to its hardness.

Aluminum Edge Trims

It offers classic sophistication. The price is higher than other metal tile trims. And it requires frequent polishing to retain luster.

PVC tile edging profiles are affordable, adaptable, and available in a variety of colours. While not as durable as metal, they are moisture resistant and won't break your budget, though they're not recommended for outdoor use.

Lightweight, easy to cut (no power tools), low-cost.

Short service: life

The surface may fade or yellow over time; it is weak in pressure resistance and easily cracks under heavy pressure.

Designs:

Round, square, rectangular, or L-shaped for your choice.

 

* It is better suited for low-traffic, low-impact areas such as feature walls or backsplashes, and wet spaces such as kitchens, bathrooms, and pools.

  • Measurement/Cutting tools: Tape measure, pencil, miter box, fine-tooth hacksaw (metal) or utility blade (PVC), file/sandpaper, etc.

  • Adhesive application tools: Notched trowel, tile adhesive (epoxy for metal).

  • Installation tools: Rubber mallet, tile leveling system, tile spacers, damp sponge, sealant (wet areas).

  • Safety tools: Gloves, eye protection.

  • Pro Tip: Use an angle grinder with a metal blade to make 45° cuts in metal, or use a tile trim end cap to make tile corner joints.

Step 1

Surface Prepare:
Clear all dust/debris from the substrate. Conduct a preliminary dry-fit of tiles and molding.
*For metal*: Apply adhesive where anchor flanges (perforated legs) will seat.

 
Step 2

Measuring & Cutting:

Measure edge length + 10% margin.
- *Straight cuts*: Use a miter box for 90° angles.
- *Corners*: Trim ends to 45° using miter box + hacksaw (PVC) or angle grinder (metal).
Smooth rough edges with file/sandpaper.
*(Optional: Use end caps for joint concealment.)*

 
Step 3

Adhesive Application:
Spread adhesive evenly with a notched trowel. *For metal*: Ensure adhesive oozes through anchor holes for maximum grip.

 
Step 4

Securing the Tile Trim:
Press molding firmly into the adhesive. *Metal profiles*: Embed flanges fully until adhesive penetrates holes.
Align with a level; tap gently into place using a rubber mallet.
*In wet areas*: Maintain a 2mm gap between trim and tile for sealant.

 
Step 5

Tiling & Finishing:

Set tiles against the molding. Wipe excess adhesive immediately.
After adhesive cures, fill trim-tile gaps with sealant. Use silicone for shower edges.

- Material selection: Choose the right trim strip for different environments to avoid the service life of the trim strip due to improper material selection. For example, stainless steel is recommended for areas with heavy traffic, outdoors, near the sea, and in humid areas. Aluminum can be used in areas with high traffic but not humid. If the edge needs to be bent or the budget is tight, choose PVC.
- Precision cutting: It is recommended to test all corners before gluing. For complex angles, we recommend using prefabricated joints.
- Waterproofing measures: It is recommended to use epoxy or silicone caulking to seal the joints between shower moldings and tiles.
- Safety: Wear gloves and goggles when handling cut metal - the edges can be very sharp and hurt your eyes.
